Hey folks, I'm moving this blog over to Wordpress. I'm not really feeling this layout and must admit that I don't give it as much attention as I do my original Blog.

Therefore, it's time for a change.

This will allow me to test the Wordpress format without messing with the content or comments.

So, come on over to Wordpress and check me out... I even have a new name. ;-)

Organize Your Computer From A to Z

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

I found this information very useful and wanted to share. It's a few pointers on how to get your computer, as well as your desk space organized. I'm guilty of a few of these and will be utilizing a lot of this advice today.

A: Arrange your disks that come with all the programs you use on your computers. Find an appropriate organizing solution. My favorite solution is to use a CD holder which will save a lot of space.

B: Back up your hard drive onto another hard drive--a portable or external hard drive. To protect your information from theft or fire damage the other hard drive may be placed in a safe or at someone else's house.

C: Cords--Check to make sure none of your cords are loose and use any number of cord holders or ties to hold cords together. I use twist ties to keep all my wires together and I added a small label to each one for easy identification.

D: Delete any files or folders that are no longer needed this will clean up some useable and much needed hard drive space.

E: Examine your desktop for no longer used icons or shortcuts. Organize these in an order on the desktop that make sense for how you use them. Add any extra icons of frequently used programs.

F: Frequently used files should be easy to find, make sure that all your files and folders are clearly labeled and dated. Divide folders into smaller chunks.

G: Get any updates for either windows or any other programs such as spybot, ad-aware, adobe, etc.

H: Have a computer cleanup supply kit made up and keep it nearby for emergencies. Make sure you include serial numbers for the different parts of your computer.

I: Inbox clean up--Delete any no longer needed or useful email messages. Try to empty your inbox at the end of each day in order to avoid a backlog of email. Look at each of your different email addresses.

J: Just Do it! And clean out the computer with a compressed can of air. Make sure your vacuum is nearby to clean up the large amount of dust inside the computer.

K: Keyboard--clean up using q-tips, a damp cloth, a compressed can of air, and keyboard cleaner.

L: List all your computer supplies. Make sure you are not running low of ink, paper, paper clips, CD's, DVD's, floppies, thumb drive, and other office related supplies.

M: Mouse clean up--Wipe off your mouse and make sure it is not full of dust and hair, which is especially important with older ones that have the ball.

N: Never write down passwords and keep them by the computer or taped to the computer. Keep them in a different room of the house in a safe place.

O: Organize your files into useful folders. Think of your computer as a file drawer system, and arrange your files into categories much like you would in file cabinet.

P: Provide email addresses, common sites you enter, bank account information, and associated passwords to your loved ones or let them know where this information can be located in case of an emergency.

Q: Quickly throw out any old papers or files on your desk. Quickly go through your desk and throw out any trash.

R: Run your different scans such as defrag, spyware, and disk clean up scans in order to protect your computer.

S: Speakers--Dust and clean speakers with Windex. Make sure the cords are plugged in and dust underneath your speakers.

T: Table--Don't forget the top or your desk space that is home to your computer needs to be organized too.

U: Upgrade any old computer parts. Make sure your computer has enough ram and memory space. Technology challenged? Get help from a computer professional.

V: Virus scan--Make sure to update the program and run your scan at least every couple days in order to protect your computer.

W: Wipe your monitor and screen with a clean cloth and cleaner that is made specifically for your computer especially if you have a LD screen.

X: Examine your desk for objects or items that do not belong. Bring a box or clothes hamper in the room to clear off the desk and return items to their proper homes.

Y: You can take everything including the computer off the desk, clean under all parts.

Z: Zip drives clean up--Delete any no longer needed computer files or folders. Move some files onto your computer if no longer needed on your thumb drive.

Gentrification Strikes Harlem

Harlem residents, entertainment venues and small business owners are in trouble. They are being priced out of homes and businesses because of area redevelopment.

I can’t say that I’m surprised. I figured that would be in the works when the Clintons moved into the city. People thought it was great that the Clintons were so ‘down’ and weren’t worried about moving into Harlem.

I thought, “Uh-oh… there goes the neighborhood.”

Gentrification of major cities is nothing new. It’s happened and has been happing in major cities all over the country – in Boston, Atlanta and Houston to name a few. Home sales are down as the housing market takes a nosedive, but upscale, inner-city neighborhoods are bustling right now.

Have you noticed any of the signs in your area? Tons of townhouses are being built in place of apartment communities or single homes. Lots of open fields and rows of trees are being uprooted as signs go up that read: “$500,000 condos coming soon!”

125th Street in Harlem is now feeling the crunch. Big business developers and city planners want the area redeveloped. But Harlem locals know what that means – some won’t be able to pay the skyrocketing prices and will be forced out of their homes and businesses as they watch the city lose its history.

Harlem, and 125th street in particular, is the connector for uptown Manhattan to the East River. 125th street cuts right across that area. For those who are not familiar with Harlem or 125th street, it’s a Mecca of sorts for Black American culture.

125th street has hosted legends and legendary events. Malcolm X used to roam the streets of Harlem, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross & The Supremes and countless other entertainers have performed at the famous Apollo Theatre.

To date, there are plans to rezone the area allowing the construction of new for shops and living spaces. The plans include 2,500 condominium-style apartments, hotels, a 21-storey office building and possibly a facility for a baseball team.

With all that said, Harlem natives have a right to be worried about the place they call home.

Snap DAT! Fire Water

Friday, March 21, 2008

I came across this pic on Google and it intrigued me. Fire and water are opposites that attract many people. I'm a water person. I love to be in the water, I love to be around beautiful blue seas... hmmm... why don't I have a beach house somehwere? *sigh*

Hillary Is Sorry

Monday, March 17, 2008

New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton decided to apologize to a group of more than 200 black community newspapers across the country last week as she responded to a question about Bill's comments in regards to Obama's win in the South Carolina primary.

Bill Clinton stated that Jesse Jackson had also won South Carolina when he ran for president in 1984 and 1988, which he obviously did not make it to the presidency, but the comment was viewed as belittling Obama's success. Basically, he may as well of said, "So what?"

Hillary stated:

"I want to put that in context. You know I am sorry if anyone was offended. It was certainly not meant in any way to be offensive. We can be proud of both Jesse Jackson and Senator Obama.

"Anyone who has followed my husband's public life or my public life know very well where we have stood and what we have stood for and who we have stood with acknowledging that whoever wins the nomination will have to heal the wounds of a bruising, historic contest.

"Once one of us has the nomination there will be a great effort to unify the Democratic party and we will do so, because, remember I have a lot of supporters who have voted for me in very large numbers and I would expect them to support Senator Obama if he were the nominee."

It's no secret that both Clintons have had overwhelming support from the black community, but that support has been overshadowed during the Obama campaign. Hillary in particular, has lost some black votes due to some of the catty remarks and low blows in this year's race.

Arguments over race and gender have been brought up numerous times throughout the primaries as Hillary and Barack duke it out.
